Dell EMC 12 TB SAS Hard Drive

The Dell EMC HUH721212AL5200 is a 12 TB nearline hard drive built for enterprise storage arrays. It uses a 12 Gb SAS interface, spins at 7200 RPM and includes a 256 MB cache. The 3.5 inch form factor supports hot-swap installation in compatible Dell EMC systems.

Suited for high-capacity bulk storage

This drive suits administrators expanding nearline tiers in Dell EMC PowerVault or PowerEdge enclosures that accept 3.5 inch SAS hot-swap trays. It is not for laptops, desktops or workstations that lack a SAS backplane and carrier. Buyers needing a different interface protocol or a 2.5 inch form factor cannot use this model.

12 Gb SAS interface decides compatibility

The single specification that determines fit is the 12 Gb SAS interface combined with the 3.5 inch hot-swap mechanical design. Only systems with a matching SAS backplane and Dell EMC carrier support will recognise and power the drive correctly.

Questions about this item

Does the HUH721212AL5200 include a mounting bracket or caddy, or must that be purchased separately?

The drive is supplied as the bare 3.5-inch SAS hard drive; any hot-swap tray or mounting bracket required by your server or enclosure is sold separately.

How do I decide between the 12 TB capacity and other capacities in this same model line?

Choose the 12 TB version when you need maximum nearline capacity per bay; select a lower capacity only if your workload demands less space or a lower cost per drive.

What does the 7.2K RPM rating mean for actual throughput in a 12 Gb SAS array?

The 7200 RPM spindle and 256 MB cache deliver sustained sequential throughput suited to bulk storage and backup workloads on a 12 Gb SAS bus.
