600 GB 15K SAS drive with tray

This new Dell Cheetah 15K.7 drive delivers 600 GB of storage on a 3.5" SAS 6 Gb/s interface spinning at 15000 RPM with a 16 MB buffer. It ships with a PowerEdge server caddy for direct installation in supported chassis. The unit weighs 2.0 pound and carries a one-year warranty.

Suits Dell PowerEdge servers listed

The drive fits the R310, R320, R410, R415, R420, R510, R515, R520, R610, R620, R710, R720, R720xd, T310, T320, T410, T420, T610, T620 and T710 models. It is not intended for workstations or desktops that lack a SAS backplane or the matching drive cage. Buyers needing larger capacity or a different form factor should consider other options.

SAS 6 Gb/s interface decides fit

The single specification that determines compatibility is the 3.5" SAS 6 Gb/s interface; the server must provide a matching SAS port and physical bay. Without that controller and cage combination the drive cannot be used.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 3.5" SAS drive into a PowerEdge R710 and which step is often missed?

Slide the drive into the supplied caddy until the SAS connector seats firmly, then lock the caddy handle; the step often missed is fully engaging the handle latch so the drive cannot shift.

What maintenance or replacement will the 15000RPM SAS drive need over time?

The 16MB cache and mechanical parts are sealed; no user maintenance is required — replacement is only needed if the drive fails or capacity is exhausted.

What limit appears first on the 6Gb/s SAS interface during sustained heavy writes?

The 6Gb/s SAS link caps sustained throughput, so the interface bandwidth becomes the bottleneck before the 15000RPM platters reach their maximum transfer rate.
