Dell JP250 Combo Drive

The Dell JP250 is an internal optical drive that combines CD-RW and DVD-ROM functions in a single 5.25-inch unit. It connects through a standard SATA interface for straightforward installation in compatible desktops or servers. The tray-load mechanism reads DVDs at up to 16x speed and CDs at up to 48x speed. It writes CD-R media at 48x and rewrites CD-RW media at 32x.

Suits legacy media workflows

This drive suits users who need to read older DVD software discs or archive data onto CD-R and CD-RW media. It is not for anyone who must write to DVD-R, DVD+R or dual-layer discs. Buyers requiring Blu-ray playback or M-DISC support should look at other categories. Systems without an available SATA port or 5.25-inch bay cannot use this unit.

Questions about this item

What do the 48X, 32X, 48X and 16X figures mean for the JP250 drive?

They indicate maximum speeds: 48× CD-R write, 32× CD-RW rewrite, 48× CD-ROM read and 16× DVD-ROM read over the Sata interface.

How do those speeds translate when the JP250 is installed in a system?

Real-world throughput depends on disc quality, host controller and software, but the drive will not exceed the stated 48×/32×/48×/16× limits on Sata.
