Dell KX158 48X SATA Internal CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive

The Dell KX158 is a SATA optical drive that reads and writes CD-R and CD-RW media while also reading DVD discs. It fits desktop systems that use a standard 5.25-inch internal bay and a SATA data connection. This drive suits users who still archive data to CD or need to install software from legacy discs. Builders without an available SATA port or external bay cannot use this unit.

Sustained write performance at 48X

During long CD-R or CD-RW sessions the drive maintains its rated 48X speed without dropping to a lower rate. The SATA interface supplies enough bandwidth to keep the buffer full, so the laser stays on track across the full disc. Heat buildup in a closed chassis does not force a throttle because the mechanism is rated for continuous operation. DVD playback remains steady at the drive's maximum read rate for the format.

Questions about this item

How loud does the 48X drive get when it runs all day?

The KX158 uses a SATA interface and spins at 48X for CD-RW and DVD combo tasks, so typical seek and spindle noise is comparable to other internal optical drives of this speed class.

What existing connection does my system need for the SATA interface on this drive?

Your motherboard or controller must provide a free SATA data port and a matching SATA power connector from the power supply.
