Business laptop for mobile professionals

The Dell Latitude 5490 is a 14.0 inch business laptop built around an Intel Core i7-8650U quad-core processor running at 1.90 GHz with 8MB cache. It ships with 16GB DDR4 memory and a 512GB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD. The 1920 x 1080 non-touch FHD display and integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 handle everyday productivity. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit is pre-installed.

Connectivity and accessories included

Three USB 3.0 ports, one USB-C port with DisplayPort output, HDMI and VGA provide flexible external display options. Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11n or better wireless cover wired and wireless networks. A 720p webcam supports video calls. The box contains the laptop, charger and battery so the system is ready to deploy immediately.

Suits travellers needing legacy ports.

The lightweight chassis and long-life 15W processor suit professionals who move between desks, meeting rooms and client sites and still require full-size HDMI and VGA. Buyers who want a touchscreen, discrete graphics for rendering or gaming, or a higher-resolution panel should look at other models. The Grade B LCD shows visible cosmetic imperfections.

Questions about this item

Will the 512 GB NVMe SSD need replacing if I run out of space?

The 512 GB NVMe drive is removable via the M.2 slot, so a larger NVMe module can be installed later if more capacity is required.

Does the 15 W i7-8650U throttle before the 14 inch FHD panel becomes a bottleneck?

Under sustained load the 15 W quad-core processor reaches its thermal limit first, lowering clocks before the integrated UHD 620 graphics saturate the 1920 x 1080 display.

How loud and hot does the chassis get when the 8650U runs all day at 1.9 GHz?

The 15 W CPU and integrated UHD 620 keep fan noise moderate and surface temperatures warm but not uncomfortable during continuous office workloads.
