Mobile workstation profile

The Dell Latitude 5491 is a 14.0 inch laptop built around an Intel Core i7-8850H processor with six cores and twelve threads running at 2.6 GHz. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4 memory and a one terabyte NVMe drive provide capacity for multi-tasking and local data sets. A discrete GeForce MX130 graphics processor supplements the integrated UHD Graphics 620 for light creative workloads. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed for immediate deployment.

Docking and expansion

Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C delivers high-speed data, video and charging through a single cable for desk docking. An HDMI port and a VGA port drive external displays without adapters. Three USB 3.0 Type-A ports keep legacy peripherals connected. Gigabit Ethernet provides wired network access where wireless is restricted. The 1920 by 1080 non-touch panel keeps the chassis thin for mobile professionals who move between meeting rooms.

Sustained thermal behaviour

The 45 watt processor maintains performance during extended compile, render or analysis tasks thanks to a cooling solution designed for continuous 45 watt dissipation. Fan curves prioritise acoustic comfort at idle and ramp gradually under load. The MX130 remains within its thermal envelope during prolonged GPU-accelerated sessions. Battery life benefits from the efficient 8th generation architecture when operating away from mains power.

Questions about this item

Will the 45 W i7-8850H throttle under long heavy loads in the 14.0" chassis?

The 45 W processor can reach its thermal limit during sustained all-core work; the slim 14.0" body has limited cooling capacity, so clock speeds may drop after several minutes of continuous load.

How loud and hot does the Latitude 5491 get when running all day?

Under extended use the fans spin up audibly and the keyboard deck becomes warm; the MX130 adds extra heat, so expect noticeable noise and surface temperature during day-long sessions.

What must I already own to use the Thunderbolt 3 port for an external display?

You need a Thunderbolt 3-capable cable and a monitor or dock that accepts Thunderbolt 3 or DisplayPort Alternate Mode over USB-C.
