DELL 146GB 15K SAS drive

This DELL MBA3147RC is a 3.5-inch internal hard drive with a 146GB capacity and a 15000RPM spindle speed. It connects via a SAS interface and ships with a mounting tray for direct installation in compatible bays. The unit is supplied new in packaging that may vary between retail and OEM styles.

Suits high-IOPS server workloads

The 15000RPM rotation and SAS interface make this drive suitable for transactional databases, email servers and other latency-sensitive applications that benefit from fast seek times. It is not for users who need large sequential throughput, high capacity per spindle or a SATA-only backplane.

146GB capacity with 15K headroom

The 146GB volume handles operating-system partitions, log files and small databases comfortably while the 15000RPM spindle sustains high random IOPS. It runs out of space quickly for media libraries, virtual-machine images or any dataset that exceeds a few hundred gigabytes.

Questions about this item

Does my system need a SAS controller to use this 15000RPM MBA3147RC drive?

Yes, this drive connects through a SAS interface, so the host must provide a compatible SAS controller or backplane.

Can I mix this 146GB 15K SAS drive with older SATA drives in the same server?

The drive uses SAS signalling; it will not operate on a SATA-only controller, but it can share a SAS backplane that also supports SATA devices.

How can I verify the MBA3147RC is running at its rated 15000RPM after installation?

Check the drive’s reported rotational speed in the RAID controller BIOS or SMART data; it should show 15000 RPM.
