Dell OptiPlex 790 990 SFF desktop

This small-form-factor desktop runs a 3.1 GHz Intel Quad Core i5 with 8 GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive. Windows 10 Pro is installed and the machine includes a DVD drive plus a USB Wi-Fi adapter. Integrated Intel HD graphics handle the display output. The chassis provides DisplayPort, VGA, Ethernet, USB 2.0 and legacy PS/2 plus serial ports.

Best for office and casual use

The specification targets casual computing, office tasks, industrial environments and light gaming. Buyers who need discrete graphics performance, larger storage capacity or a newer processor architecture should consider other systems. The integrated graphics and mechanical drive limit heavy creative workloads and modern gaming titles.

32 GB maximum RAM capacity

The motherboard supports up to 32 GB of memory across its DIMM slots, which is the ceiling for any future upgrade. This limit is useful to know when planning a memory increase for multitasking or virtualisation.

Questions about this item

How do I install the USB WiFi adapter in the OptiPlex 790 990 SFF?

Plug the USB WiFi adapter into any free USB 2.0 port on the front or rear panel. The step people miss is enabling the wireless connection in Windows 10 network settings before assuming it works automatically.

What maintenance or replacement will the 500GB HDD need later?

The mechanical hard drive is the component most likely to fail first. Plan to replace it with a new HDD or SSD when you notice slower boot times, file errors or unusual drive noise.

What limit appears first under sustained use on this desktop?

The integrated Intel HD Graphics shares the 8GB system memory. Under sustained graphical load the shared RAM becomes the bottleneck before the 3.1GHz Quad Core i5 reaches its thermal ceiling.
