Compact desktop with RGB lighting

The Dell OptiPlex small form factor desktop ships new with an Intel Core i5-6500 processor running at 3.20 GHz and 6 MB of cache. It includes 8 GB of DDR3 memory, a 512 GB SSD, and Windows 10 Pro. A remote-controlled RGB front panel, USB WiFi adapter, and an RGB backlit keyboard and mouse combo are also supplied.

Thermals and power in daily use

Air cooling handles the quad-core processor during typical home and office workloads. The small form factor chassis keeps the system quiet while running everyday applications and media playback. Power draw remains modest for a desktop of this class under normal conditions.

The 8 GB DDR3 memory limit

Only 8 GB of DDR3 is installed and the platform uses DDR3 exclusively. Buyers who need more memory capacity or a newer memory generation should look elsewhere. The fixed 8 GB configuration decides whether this system meets your workload requirements.

Questions about this item

How do I install the USB WiFi adapter that comes with the OptiPlex SFF?

Plug the USB WiFi adapter into any free USB port on the front or rear panel; Windows 10 Pro will detect it and install the driver automatically.

When will the 8GB DDR3 memory need to be upgraded?

The 8GB DDR3 is adequate for Windows 10 Pro and everyday tasks; add a second module only if you run heavier multitasking workloads later.

What thermal limit appears first during long sessions on the i5-6500?

The small form factor air-cooling system will hit its heat-dissipation ceiling before the CPU reaches its 3.60 GHz turbo ceiling.
