Dell 8TB Nearline SAS 12Gb/s Drive

This Dell P2DKC is a 3.5-inch 8TB nearline SAS hard drive spinning at 7200 RPM with a 12Gb/s interface. It is built for bulk storage in servers or workstations that accept hot-swap SAS drives. The bare-drive packaging suits integrators and IT teams refreshing Dell arrays.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

It suits administrators expanding nearline capacity in compatible Dell PowerEdge or Precision systems with SAS backplanes and hot-swap bays. Buyers whose chassis or controller only support slower SAS speeds, smaller form factors, or non-hot-swap caddies should look elsewhere.

The deciding specification

The 12Gb/s SAS interface is the single specification that decides fitment; the drive will only operate at full speed when connected to a 12Gb/s SAS controller and backplane.

Questions about this item

Does the 3.5" SAS drive fit a standard hot-swap tray?

Yes, the 3.5" form factor matches standard SAS hot-swap bays and the drive is built for hot-swap use.

What is the correct way to install the drive in a hot-swap bay?

Insert the drive firmly until the SAS connector seats fully; the common error is stopping before the latch clicks.

How often should the 7200 RPM drive be replaced in a nearline workload?

Plan replacement around the manufacturer's rated annualised failure rate for 7.2K nearline drives, typically after three to five years of continuous operation.
