Latitude 5490 business notebook

The Dell Latitude 5490 is a 14.0 inch laptop built for mobile professionals who need a reliable Windows 10 Pro machine. It ships new with an Intel Core i7-8650U quad-core processor running at 1.90 GHz, 16 GB of DDR4 memory and a 512 GB SSD. The 1920 x 1080 non-touch display and integrated UHD Graphics 620 handle everyday office workloads.

Connectivity and expansion

A single HDMI output lets you add an external monitor for a dual-screen setup without a dock. IEEE 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth provide wireless links to networks and peripherals, while the integrated webcam supports video calls. The 4-cell lithium-ion battery keeps the system running away from mains power, freeing desk space for users who move between meeting rooms.

Sustained workload behaviour

The chassis has been tested against 17 MIL-STD-810G benchmarks, indicating durability for daily transport and extended use. Integrated UHD Graphics 620 shares system memory, so graphics-intensive tasks will draw from the 16 GB pool rather than dedicated video RAM. Buyers who need discrete GPU performance or more internal storage capacity should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

Will the 1.90 GHz quad-core i7-8650U throttle when I push all four cores for long periods?

The integrated UHD Graphics 620 and CPU share the same cooling; heavy sustained workloads will hit the thermal ceiling before the processor reaches its maximum turbo frequency.

How loud and hot does the 14.0" Latitude 5490 get when it runs all day on Windows 10 Pro?

The 4-cell lithium-ion battery and compact chassis mean fan noise rises noticeably under load, and the bottom surface becomes warm during extended use.

Which peripherals must I already own to use the HDMI port and 802.11ac Wi-Fi on this laptop?

You need an HDMI cable and a compatible display for video output, plus a wireless router or access point that supports the 802.11ac standard for network connectivity.
