Dell PowerConnect 2808 8-port Gigabit switch
The Dell PowerConnect 2808 is an 8-port Gigabit Ethernet switch designed for small offices or workgroups that need managed Layer 2 connectivity. It fits a standard 1U rack space and uses twisted-pair cabling for every port.
Upgrade from unmanaged or 10/100 switches
Moving up from an unmanaged 10/100 switch adds full wire-speed Gigabit throughput on all eight ports plus Layer 2 management features such as VLANs and traffic control. The jump is worthwhile when file transfers, backups or VoIP traffic regularly saturate 100 Mbps links.
Limits of 10/100/1000Base-T over twisted pair
Each port negotiates 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps, but the copper medium caps segment length at 100 metres and cannot carry power to attached devices. The switch has no SFP slots, so fibre uplinks are not an option on this model.
