Half-width rack node bare chassis with dual heatsinks and iDRAC9 Express remote management
This bare chassis is a half-width server node designed for the PowerEdge C6420 platform. It targets system integrators and data-centre operators who will populate their own processors, memory and storage. The unit ships without memory, storage controller or RAID hardware, providing a clean slate for custom high-density deployments. Remote management is handled through iDRAC9 Express.
The node fits into a compatible C6420 shared-infrastructure chassis and secures with the standard half-width sled mechanism. Two processor heatsinks are pre-installed, so CPU installation follows the usual socket procedure without extra mounting hardware. Common issues include forgetting to populate memory in the correct channel order and neglecting to license iDRAC9 Enterprise features if advanced remote control is required. No drive bays or backplanes are included in this bare configuration.
The node supports two processor sockets and the memory capacity allowed by the chosen CPUs and DIMM population rules. Storage density depends entirely on the backplane and drive carriers selected for the enclosing chassis. Compute headroom scales with the installed processor SKUs, while I/O expansion is constrained by the shared chassis mid-plane and available PCIe slots. Without a RAID controller or onboard storage interfaces, all drive connectivity must be provided externally.

Log into the iDRAC9 Express web interface using the default credentials, confirm the firmware version is displayed, and check that system health sensors report normal readings for power and temperature.
The chassis ships with two processor heatsinks installed; you must add compatible processors, memory modules, storage drives, and a RAID controller if hardware RAID is required.
Choose the half-width node form factor, which fits two nodes side-by-side in a 2U C6420 sled, maximising density while sharing the chassis power and cooling infrastructure.
