Dell PowerEdge M640 Blade Server

This Dell PowerEdge M640 is a dual-socket blade server designed for dense compute environments. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5220 processors running at 2.2 GHz, 384 GB of DDR4 memory and two 4 TB SATA hard drives. The PERC H330 storage controller and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management are included.

Suited for virtualisation hosts

The 384 GB DDR4 capacity supports large virtual machine counts or in-memory databases within a half-height blade slot. The two drive bays limit local storage to the installed 4 TB SATA drives. Buyers who need more than two internal drives or add-in accelerator cards should evaluate other form factors.

Maximum memory capacity of 1 TB

The system supports up to 1 TB of DDR4 across its DIMM slots, leaving room for future expansion beyond the factory 384 GB. This ceiling determines whether the blade can grow with your workload or if a higher-capacity platform is required.

Questions about this item

When will the 384 GB DDR4 memory need to be expanded?

The blade supports up to 1 TB of DDR4 so you can add modules later if workloads exceed the installed 384 GB.

Which component reaches its limit first during sustained heavy compute?

The two Xeon Gold 5220 CPUs each have 18 cores at 2.2 GHz and 24.75 MB cache; they will saturate before the memory or storage controllers do.

How much heat and noise should I expect when the blade runs all day in a chassis?

The M640 relies on the chassis fans for cooling; with dual CPUs and two 2.5 inch SATA drives the unit draws significant power and the chassis will increase fan speed accordingly.
