Dell PowerEdge M640 blade server

The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a dual-socket blade server designed for dense compute environments. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6128 processors and 128 GB of DDR4 memory. This configuration targets virtualization hosts and database workloads that need high core counts in a shared chassis.

Thermals noise and power draw

The blade form factor relies on the chassis fans for cooling, so acoustics and thermal output depend on the enclosure rather than the server itself. Power draw scales with the two 3.4 GHz Xeon Gold 6128 CPUs and the installed DDR4 modules under load. The integrated PERC H330 SAS storage controller manages the two 2.5 inch SATA drives without adding a separate RAID card.

Build integration and expandability

The unit fits a standard M-series blade chassis and connects through a 10 GbE 2-port 562T adapter for network fabric. Remote management is handled by iDRAC9 Enterprise for out-of-band control. Two drive bays support 2.5 inch SATA media, and memory can expand to 1 TB across the available DDR4 slots. Buyers who need more than two internal drives or a different drive interface should look at rackmount alternatives.

Questions about this item

How do I install this M640 blade into a PowerEdge chassis, and what step is often missed?

Slide the blade firmly into an empty bay until the latch clicks, then verify iDRAC9 Enterprise shows the blade online before powering on; skipping the latch check leaves the blade partially seated.

What maintenance or replacement will the 2x 4TB SATA drives need later?

The SATA 2.5" drives are mechanical; plan to replace them after 3–5 years of continuous use or when SMART alerts appear, and keep firmware current via iDRAC9.

What limit appears first on the PERC H330 controller during sustained write workloads?

The H330 lacks a dedicated cache, so sustained writes saturate the controller’s write throughput before the dual Xeon Gold 6128 CPUs reach full utilisation.
