Dense 1U Rack Server

The Dell PowerEdge R440 is a 1U rackmount server built for space-constrained data centres and virtualization clusters. It ships with dual Xeon Gold 5118 processors, 128 GB of DDR4 ECC memory and a PERC H330 storage controller. Four enterprise 8 TB hard drives provide high-capacity storage out of the box.

Suitable For And Limits

This configuration suits teams that need dense compute and large spinning-disk capacity in a single rack unit. Buyers who require hardware RAID 5 or 6, solid-state drive support, or GPU acceleration should look at other platforms.

Deciding Specification

The PERC H330 controller operates in RAID 0, 1 or pass-through mode only; it does not support parity RAID levels. Confirm that your workload can tolerate this limitation before purchasing.

Questions about this item

What rack rails do I need to mount this 1U server in my cabinet?

The server is a 1U rackmount unit; Dell Ready Rails are not included, so you must provide your own compatible sliding or static rails.

Will my existing 3.5-inch SATA drives work with the PERC H330 controller in this server?

Yes. The H330 supports SATA 6 Gb/s and SAS 12 Gb/s, so standard 3.5-inch SATA hard drives will connect and operate normally.

How do I confirm the two Xeon Gold 5118 processors and 128 GB of DDR4-2400 memory are recognised after first boot?

Open the iDRAC 9 Express web interface or enter the system BIOS; both will show two 12-core CPUs at 2.3 GHz and eight 16 GB DIMMs running at 2400 MT/s.
