Dual 12-core Xeon 1U server

The Dell PowerEdge R440 is a 1U rack server built for dense data-centre deployments. Two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors provide 24 cores at 2.3 GHz with 3.2 GHz turbo. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4-2400 ECC memory and a PERC H730P RAID controller support virtualization, cloud and storage workloads. Dual 550 W platinum power supplies deliver redundant power.

Who should consider this system

IT teams needing a compact 1U platform for virtualization, application hosting or database workloads will match the dual 12-core configuration and hardware RAID flexibility. Buyers who require more than four 3.5-inch drive bays or higher memory capacity out of the box should evaluate larger form-factor servers.

PERC H730P RAID controller

The PERC H730P with 2 GB cache enables RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across SAS and SATA drives. Battery-backed write cache protects data during power loss. This controller decides whether the storage topology meets your redundancy and performance requirements.

Questions about this item

How can I confirm the PERC H730P controller is operating correctly after installation?

The controller initialises during POST and its BIOS utility shows battery status, firmware version and attached drives. RAID arrays report optimal in the utility and iDRAC 9 Express logs controller health.

What ships with the server and what must be purchased separately?

Included: 2x Xeon Gold 5118 2.3 GHz 12-core CPUs, 16 GB DDR4-2400 ECC RDIMM (2x 8 GB), PERC H730P with 2 GB cache, 4x 3.5" drive fillers, dual 1 GbE, iDRAC 9 Express, 2x 550 W PSUs. Drives and rails are not included.

Which drive capacity or version should I select for the four 3.5" bays?

The chassis accepts 3.5" SAS or SATA HDDs and SSDs. Choose capacity per workload — larger SAS HDDs for capacity tiers, SATA SSDs for read-heavy tiers. Mixing is supported; the H730P manages RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60.
