Compact 1U rack server for dense deployments

The Dell PowerEdge R440 is a 1U rack server built for business, data centre, virtualisation, cloud and storage workloads. Two Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processors each provide 10 cores at 2.2 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. 128 GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory supports reliable operation. Four 3.5-inch drive bays hold the included 8 TB hard drives.

Dual 550 W platinum supplies

Two 550 watt platinum-efficiency power supplies deliver redundant power in a hot-swap configuration. The 1U chassis uses front-to-rear airflow designed for dense rack environments. Integrated dual-port gigabit Ethernet handles network traffic without a discrete card. iDRAC 9 Express provides remote monitoring and administration independent of the operating system.

PERC H730P controller enables hardware RAID

The Dell PERC H730P with 2 GB cache and battery backup supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes. Four Dell enterprise 8 TB 7.2K SATA drives are pre-installed in the 3.5-inch bays. PCIe expansion slots remain available for additional networking or storage controllers. Buyers needing front bezel or ready rails must source them separately.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 4× 8 TB 3.5″ SATA drives into the 1U chassis, and what step is often missed?

Slide each drive into one of the four front bays until the latch clicks; the step many miss is configuring the RAID array in the PERC H730P BIOS before the OS sees any volume.

Which components will need replacement first during long-term operation?

The four 7.2K RPM hard drives and the H730P controller battery are the parts most likely to require replacement after extended service.

What thermal or power limit appears first when both Xeon Silver 4114 CPUs run at 3.0 GHz turbo under sustained load?

The dual 550 W platinum power supplies set the ceiling; prolonged all-core turbo can draw enough current to trigger throttling before the 1U cooling reaches its limit.
