Dual Xeon Gold 5118 1U Server

This 1U rack server ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors at 2.3 GHz, each with 12 cores and 3.2 GHz turbo. 512 GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory fills 16 slots. The PERC H730P controller manages eight 1.8 TB 10K SAS drives. Dual 550 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Express complete the package.

Workload Fit and Limits

Suits virtualization hosts, database nodes and dense cloud clusters that need high core counts and large local storage in one rack unit. Not for buyers who need more drive bays, GPU acceleration, 10 GbE networking or a deeper chassis for additional PCIe cards.

PERC H730P RAID Controller

The H730P provides 2 GB cache and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. It connects to the eight SAS drives at 12 Gb/s and determines the storage performance and redundancy level of the system.

Questions about this item

What rack space and drive bays does the 1U R440 chassis provide for mounting?

The 1U chassis occupies one rack unit and provides eight front 2.5-inch drive bays for the installed SAS drives.

How are the sixteen 32 GB DDR4-2400 modules installed, and what common error should be avoided?

Populate all sixteen DIMM slots following the per-processor channel sequence in the service manual; the frequent mistake is skipping the required order, which prevents the server from posting.

When will the PERC H730P controller battery and the eight 1.8 TB SAS drives typically need replacement?

The RAID battery usually lasts three to five years before it must be swapped to keep write-back cache active; the 10 K SAS drives should be monitored via SMART and replaced when reallocated sectors or latency spikes appear.
