Dense 1U rack server for virtualization

The Dell PowerEdge R440 is a 1U rackmount server built for space-efficient data centre deployment. Two Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processors provide twenty cores at a base frequency of 2.2GHz. Thirty-two gigabytes of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory supports reliable operation for virtualization, application hosting and database workloads. Integrated dual-port Gigabit Ethernet and iDRAC 9 Express enable remote administration.

Sustained performance

Under sustained load both Xeon Silver 4114 CPUs can reach a 3.0GHz turbo frequency across their ten cores each. The PERC H730P controller with two gigabytes of cache and battery backup maintains write performance during extended RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 or 60 operations. Eight 600GB 10K SAS drives deliver consistent 12Gb/s throughput for mixed read and write patterns. Dual 550 watt platinum power supplies provide redundancy so the server remains operational if one unit fails.

Verify rack depth and operating system RAID

The 1U form factor requires a standard four-post rack with sufficient depth for cable management at the rear. Confirm that your hypervisor or operating system includes drivers for the PERC H730P controller and supports the desired RAID level. Network infrastructure must provide two Gigabit Ethernet ports for the integrated adapter. Note that front bezel and ready rails are not included with this unit.

Questions about this item

How loud and hot does the R440 get when both Xeon 4114 processors run at 3.0 GHz Turbo all day?

The 1U chassis uses dual 550 W platinum PSUs and front-to-rear airflow to handle sustained 10-core loads; expect typical data-centre noise levels and heat output matched to a 1U density design.

Which rails and cabling do I need to mount the 8-bay 2.5" server in a standard rack?

Ready Rails and front bezel are not included, so you must supply compatible sliding rails and any SAS or power cables required for your rack PDU layout.

Can the PERC H730P controller manage my existing 6 Gb/s SAS drives alongside the supplied 12 Gb/s 600 GB disks?

Yes, the H730P supports mixed SAS speeds; the 12 Gb/s backplane will negotiate down to 6 Gb/s for older drives while keeping the new 600 GB 10K disks at full speed.
