PowerEdge R530 dual-processor capacity

The Dell PowerEdge R530 is a 2U rack server built around the Intel Xeon E5-2603 V3 six-core 1.6GHz processor. It ships with 16GB of DDR4 memory across twelve DIMM slots, supporting up to 384GB total capacity when a second processor is installed. The system targets workloads that benefit from redundant power and hot-plug drive bays.

Redundant power and hot-plug drive bays

Two 750W redundant hot-swap power supplies keep the server running during a single supply failure. Eight 3.5-inch hot-plug bays accept SAS or SATA drives, and the installed pair of 2TB 7.2K SAS drives connect to the PERC H730 controller with 1GB cache. A DVD-ROM drive and iDRAC8 remote management are also included.

PCIe 3.0 and 2.0 expansion limits

The chassis provides five PCIe slots: three wired for PCIe 3.0 and two for PCIe 2.0. Network connectivity is handled by a daughter card with four 1GbE ports. Buyers who need more than five add-in cards or 10GbE networking without an extra card should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

What SAS speed does the H730 controller support, and what drive throughput does that limit?

The H730 is a 12Gbps RAID controller, so installed 6Gbps SAS drives run at their native 6Gbps link speed rather than the controller's maximum.

What chassis clearance and bay layout does the R530 need for its 3.5" drives?

The 2U rackmount unit accepts up to eight 3.5" hot-plug drives in its front bays and measures 25.4" deep, 17.1" wide and 3.4" high.

How is the H730 RAID array initialised, and which step is often missed?

Boot into the H730 BIOS (Ctrl+R), create a virtual disk across the two 2TB SAS drives, then initialise it; skipping the initialisation leaves the array unusable.
