2U Rack Server with 12 Bays

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built for expanding business and data centre environments. It carries two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 12‑core processors at 2.3 GHz with 3.2 GHz turbo and 128 GB of DDR4‑2400 ECC registered memory. A PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache supports RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC 9 Express management are included.

Suited for virtualization and storage workloads

This server suits teams running virtualization, database management or software‑defined storage who need high‑capacity 3.5″ drive bays and hardware RAID. Buyers who require front bezel, ready rails or additional PCIe cards not listed should look elsewhere.

PERC H730P RAID controller with battery-backed cache

The PERC H730P provides 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA connectivity with battery‑backed 2 GB cache, enabling RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass‑through mode. This single component determines whether the storage topology and data‑protection level match the deployment plan.

Questions about this item

How do I install the H730P RAID controller and what step is often missed?

The H730P installs in a PCIe slot with its 2 GB battery module; the step often missed is connecting the battery cable to the controller so write-back caching activates.

Which components will need replacement first during long-term operation?

The two 750 W platinum power supplies and the H730P battery are the primary replaceable items; drive bay fillers may be swapped when drives are added.

What limit appears first when the dual Xeon Gold 5118 CPUs run sustained workloads?

The 750 W power supply rating caps total system draw before the 2.3 GHz base or 3.2 GHz turbo frequencies become constrained.
