PowerEdge R540 12-Bay 2U Server

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built for expanding business environments. It ships with dual Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors running at 2.3GHz with 3.2GHz turbo across 24 total cores. The system includes 64GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory and a PERC H330 storage controller managing twelve 3.5-inch drive bays.

Storage-Dense Virtualisation Platform

This configuration suits organisations running virtualisation clusters, software-defined storage or database workloads that demand high internal capacity. Twelve 4TB 7.2K SATA drives provide substantial raw space for bulk data. Buyers needing all-flash performance, GPU acceleration or smaller form factors should evaluate alternative platforms.

Dual Xeon Gold 5118 12-Core Processors

The two Xeon Gold 5118 CPUs deliver 24 cores at 2.3GHz base frequency with 3.2GHz turbo for multi-threaded throughput. This processor choice determines the server's suitability for concurrent virtual machines and database instances. Memory capacity and drive count scale around this compute foundation.

Questions about this item

Will the R540's 12Gb/s SAS/SATA controller work with my existing 3.5" SATA drives?

The PERC H330 controller supports 12Gb/s SAS and 6Gb/s SATA, so your 3.5" SATA drives will connect and operate at SATA speeds.

How can I verify the two Xeon Gold 5118 CPUs are running at 2.3GHz base and 3.2GHz turbo after installation?

Use iDRAC9 Express or the system BIOS to view real-time CPU clock speeds and confirm both 12-core processors hit 2.3GHz base and 3.2GHz turbo.

The listing says front bezel and ready rails are not included — what else must I purchase to rack-mount and populate all 12 bays?

You will need to buy sliding or static rails separately; the 12x 4TB 7.2K SATA drives, 64GB DDR4-2400 ECC memory, dual 750W PSUs and bezel-less chassis are already supplied.
