Rack Server with 12 Drive Bays

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rackmount server system built for expanding business and data centre environments. It ships with dual Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors, each offering 16 cores at a 2.1 GHz base frequency with 3.7 GHz turbo. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory and twelve 3.5-inch enterprise hard drives.

Storage-Focused Workloads

This configuration suits organisations running virtualisation, database management, or software-defined storage that need high-capacity SAS storage in a 2U form factor. The PERC HBA330 controller manages twelve 4 TB 7.2K SAS drives providing substantial raw capacity. Buyers who need solid-state performance, GPU-accelerated compute, or a compact tower form factor should evaluate other platforms.

12-Bay 3.5-Inch SAS Chassis

The defining specification is the twelve-bay 3.5-inch chassis populated with 4 TB SAS hard drives and a 12 Gb/s HBA330 controller. This layout fixes the storage interface and physical drive count, determining whether the server matches a capacity-first deployment plan.

Questions about this item

How much power do the dual 750W platinum supplies draw when the R540 runs all day under load?

The system ships with two 750 Watt platinum-efficiency power supplies designed for continuous operation in a 2U rack chassis.

Which rails or rackmount kit do I need to install this 2U server in a standard cabinet?

The front bezel and ready rails are not included, so you must supply your own sliding rails or fixed shelf that supports a 2U form factor.

Will the PERC HBA330 controller recognise the SAS drives already in my older PowerEdge array?

The HBA330 is a 12Gb/s SAS/SATA controller that presents the twelve 4TB 7.2K SAS drives to the OS without RAID abstraction.
