  • iDRAC 9 Express plus dual 750 W platinum PSUs enable remote management and redundant power

Capacity and Compute

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors, each delivering 16 cores at 2.1 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. A total of 128 GB of DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory is installed across eight DIMM slots, providing error-corrected capacity for virtualization and database workloads.

Storage Focus

The system ships with a PERC HBA330 controller and twelve 3.5-inch enterprise hard drives, each rated at 8 TB and 7.2 K RPM on a SATA 6 Gb/s interface. This configuration suits organisations that need high raw capacity for software-defined storage, backup targets or archival workloads, while the HBA330 presents drives without hardware RAID abstraction. Buyers who need solid-state performance, hardware RAID offload, or a smaller 1U form factor should evaluate different chassis designs.

Controller Interface

The PERC HBA330 operates at 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA and determines whether the twelve drive bays can be addressed directly by the operating system or a software-defined storage layer. Verify that your software stack supports passthrough mode on this controller before deployment.

Questions about this item

How do I verify the 12x 8TB drives and 128GB DDR4-2666 memory are all recognised after the first boot?

Open the iDRAC 9 Express web interface and check the Storage and Memory inventory tabs; all twelve 8TB 7.2K SATA drives and the eight 16GB DDR4 modules should appear with healthy status.

Which accessories are missing from the shipment and must be sourced separately?

The front bezel and Ready Rails are not included; order the correct Dell 2U rail kit and bezel for your rack depth if you need them.

Should I select the HBA330 or a RAID controller for the twelve 3.5-inch bays?

The unit ships with the HBA330 which presents drives in JBOD/pass-through mode; choose a PERC RAID controller instead if you need hardware RAID levels across the 8TB drives.
