Product identity

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server fitted with two Intel Xeon Silver 4114 2.2GHz 10-core processors and 16GB DDR4-2400 ECC memory. A PERC H330 controller manages twelve 3.5-inch 4TB 7.2K SATA drives. Dual 750W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Express remote management complete the configuration. Front bezel and rails are not included.

Who this suits

Organisations needing a dense 2U platform for virtualization, database workloads or software-defined storage will match the twelve-bay capacity and dual-processor throughput. Buyers who require more memory channels, additional PCIe slots, or a different drive form factor should evaluate alternative chassis designs.

Deciding specification

The twelve 3.5-inch drive bays paired with the H330 controller define the storage ceiling; if the workload demands more bays or a different RAID feature set, this server will not meet the requirement.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 12-bay 3.5" chassis or a smaller drive count?

The 12-bay 3.5" layout fills the 2U R540 with twelve 4 TB 7.2K SATA drives behind the PERC H330 controller, giving maximum raw capacity in this form factor.

What does the 2.2 GHz Xeon Silver 4114 actually deliver under load?

Each 10-core Xeon Silver 4114 runs at 2.2 GHz base and can reach 3.0 GHz turbo, so the pair provides twenty threads that scale with virtualization or database workloads.

How does the PERC H330 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA controller limit real-world throughput?

The H330 caps each drive at the SATA 6 Gb/s link speed, so the twelve 7.2K disks share the controller’s 12 Gb/s aggregate bandwidth without hardware RAID overhead.
