Dell PowerEdge R540 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built for expanding business and data centre environments. It ships with two Intel Xeon Silver 4114 2.2GHz 10-core processors and 16GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory. A Dell PERC H730P controller with 2GB cache manages the twelve drive bays. Dual 750W platinum power supplies provide redundancy.

Suited for virtualisation

This configuration targets organisations running virtualisation, database management or software-defined storage on a 12-bay 3.5-inch platform. The H730P supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 for flexible data protection. Buyers who need front bezel or ready rails included should look elsewhere. Teams requiring GPU compute density or 2.5-inch drive density should consider other form factors.

Twelve 3.5-inch drive bays with H730P RAID

The single specification that decides fit is the twelve 3.5-inch SATA bays paired with the H730P controller. It accommodates the twelve installed 8TB 7.2K SATA drives and supports SAS or SSD upgrades within the same bays. iDRAC9 Express enables remote monitoring and administration without an operating system. The 2U height fixes the rack footprint.

Questions about this item

How do I verify the H730P controller and all twelve 8TB drives are recognised after first boot?

Enter the PERC H730P BIOS utility at startup to confirm the controller battery is charged and all twelve 8TB drives appear in the physical disk list.

What ships with the server and which items must be sourced separately?

The unit includes two Xeon Silver 4114 processors, 16GB DDR4-2400 ECC memory, H730P controller with battery, twelve 8TB 7.2K SATA drives, dual 1GbE ports, iDRAC9 Express, and two 750W platinum PSUs; front bezel and ready rails are not included.

Should I choose the 16GB DDR4-2400 configuration or add more memory for virtualisation workloads?

The supplied 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4-2400 ECC registered DIMMs suit light workloads; virtualisation typically benefits from additional DDR4-2400 ECC registered modules to match the twelve drive bays and dual 10-core processors.
