2U rack server with twelve 3.5-inch bays holding twelve 4 TB hard drives, dual Xeon Gold 5118 processors at 2.3 GHz, 16 GB DDR4 memory, HBA330 storage controller and dual 750 W power supplies
The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built for growing business environments that need virtualization, database management or software-defined storage. Two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors at 2.3 GHz with 3.2 GHz turbo deliver 24 total cores for multi-threaded workloads. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory provide a reliable base for critical applications. Twelve 3.5-inch bays are populated with 4 TB enterprise SATA drives running at 7.2 K RPM for high-capacity storage.
Redundant 750 watt platinum-efficiency power supplies share the load and keep the system running if one unit fails. The HBA330 controller manages twelve drives without a RAID overhead, which reduces controller heat and simplifies drive replacement. Front-accessible drive bays let administrators swap disks without removing the server from the rack. Integrated dual-port gigabit Ethernet handles management and workload traffic on standard copper cabling.
iDRAC 9 Express provides out-of-band monitoring, power control and virtual console access over a dedicated network connection, so administrators can troubleshoot without being in the data centre. The chassis ships without a front bezel or ready rails, so buyers must supply their own rack-mount hardware and cosmetic cover. PCIe slots remain available for additional network cards, storage controllers or accelerators as workloads grow. ECC memory and enterprise-class drives protect data integrity during continuous operation.

New to this? Buying server hardware with crypto — what to check, what it costs to pay, and what is never asked for.

Slide each 3.5" drive into the front bays until the carrier clicks; the step often missed is seating the SAS/SATA connector fully on the backplane so the HBA330 detects every drive.
Plan to replace any 4TB drive that reports SMART errors or exceeds its rated workload; power supplies are hot-swap, so a failed 750W unit can be swapped without shutting down the server.
The 16GB DDR4-2400 memory capacity fills before the 12-core processors reach thermal throttle, so memory becomes the first bottleneck under heavy sustained workloads.
