2U rack server for virtualisation and databases

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built for virtualisation, software-defined storage and database workloads. It runs two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors at 2.1GHz with a 3.7GHz turbo frequency, providing 16 cores each. A total of 512GB DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory is installed across 16 modules of 32GB. The chassis holds twelve 3.5-inch drive bays.

HBA330 controller and twelve 8TB drives handle

The Dell PERC HBA330 12Gb/s SAS/SATA storage controller manages twelve Dell Enterprise 8TB 7.2K SATA drives. This combination delivers raw capacity for archives, backups or software-defined storage pools without RAID overhead from a PERC card. An integrated dual-port Gigabit Ethernet adapter provides basic network connectivity. iDRAC 9 Express enables remote monitoring and administration over a dedicated management port.

Ready rails and bezel are not included

The server arrives without front bezel or ready rails, so mounting hardware must be sourced separately for rack installation. Two 750-watt platinum-efficiency power supplies are fitted for redundancy. Installers should verify rail compatibility with the target rack and plan cabling for twelve 3.5-inch drives and dual network ports before sliding the unit into place.

Questions about this item

Will the 8 TB 7.2K SATA drives in the 12-bay chassis need scheduled replacement?

Enterprise 7.2K SATA drives are rated for continuous operation; plan replacements when SMART attributes or iDRAC alerts show reallocated sectors or rising error counts.

What limits sustained throughput on the PERC HBA330 with twelve 6 Gb/s drives?

The HBA330 provides 12 Gb/s SAS lanes; twelve SATA 6 Gb/s drives can saturate the controller before the 16-core Xeon Gold 6130 CPUs reach full utilisation.

How loud and hot does the 2U server run with dual 750 W platinum PSUs under all-day load?

Dual platinum supplies run efficiently; the 2U chassis uses temperature-controlled fans that ramp up under load, so expect noticeable airflow noise in a quiet room.
