Ready for virtualisation and database workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built with two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 16 cores and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 32 GB of DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory across four modules and ships with a PERC H730P RAID controller offering 2 GB cache and battery backup. Twelve 4 TB 7.2K SATA 3.5-inch hard drives provide high-capacity storage, while dual 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC 9 Express remote management complete the package.

Suited for storage-heavy business applications

This configuration targets organisations that need dense 3.5-inch drive bays and hardware RAID for virtualisation, software-defined storage or database workloads. The dual-socket design and ECC memory support reliable multi-tenant environments. Buyers who require front bezel or ready rails included in the box, or who need higher core counts per socket, should evaluate other platforms. The fixed 12-bay chassis also limits future drive expansion beyond the populated slots.

Storage controlled by PERC H730P with battery

The single specification that decides fit is the PERC H730P controller, which supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode with its 2 GB battery-backed cache. This determines both data protection options and the maximum number of arrays you can create across the twelve installed drives.
