Dual Xeon 10-core server for virtualization

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processors, each running at 2.2 GHz with a 3.0 GHz turbo frequency. It includes 32 GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory and a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache. The system ships with twelve 3.5-inch 8 TB SATA drives spinning at 7.2K RPM.

Suited for storage-heavy workloads needing RAID

This configuration suits organisations that need high raw capacity and hardware RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 in a compact 2U form factor. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC 9 Express remote management support continuous operation. Buyers who need faster solid-state storage or larger memory footprints should evaluate other options.

Twelve 8 TB SATA drives define the storage baseline

The twelve 8 TB SATA hard drives provide the primary capacity for the server. The PERC H730P controller manages these drives across multiple RAID modes with battery-backed cache protection. This drive count and interface determine whether the array meets your capacity and performance requirements.

Questions about this item

When will the PERC H730P controller battery need replacement?

The PERC H730P includes a battery-backed cache module; plan to replace the battery every three to five years to maintain write-back cache protection during power loss.

Which component hits its limit first during continuous heavy I/O?

The twelve 7.2K RPM SATA drives will saturate their 6 Gb/s interface before the H730P controller or the dual Xeon Silver 4114 processors reach their throughput ceiling.

How loud and hot does the R540 run with both 750 W PSUs loaded all day?

Dual 750 W platinum power supplies and front-to-rear airflow keep the 2U chassis within Dell thermal specs; expect noticeable fan noise under sustained load but temperatures remain controlled.
