A 2U rack server with dual 10-core Xeon Silver 4114 CPUs, 256GB DDR4, and eight 4TB SAS drives on an H730P controller
The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built for data-intensive workloads. It ships with dual Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processors, each running at 2.2 GHz with 10 cores and 3.0 GHz turbo capability. The system includes 256 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules. Eight 4 TB 7.2K SAS hard drives and a PERC H730P RAID controller provide 32 TB of raw storage with support for RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.
This server fits teams running virtualization clusters, database hosting or business-critical file and application services. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC 9 Enterprise management support high availability and remote administration. Buyers needing more than two processors or memory beyond 1 TB should look elsewhere. The 3.5-inch drive bays limit density compared to 2.5-inch configurations.
The installed Dell PERC H730P 2 GB controller manages SAS and SATA drives through twelve Gb/s ports with battery-backed cache. It enables the full range of RAID levels including pass-through mode for software-defined storage. This controller choice determines which drive types and RAID configurations are supported without additional hardware.

Populate the 16 slots in the order shown on the riser diagram, using all eight 32GB DDR4 2666MHz registered ECC modules so both Xeon Silver 4114 CPUs have balanced memory channels.
The eight 4TB 7.2K SAS drives are the primary wear items; plan to swap them as SMART alerts appear or after their rated workload limit is reached.
The dual 750W platinum supplies and the 2U chassis cooling set the sustained ceiling; once total draw approaches the supply rating the fans ramp to maximum and turbo is throttled.
