Server configuration

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built for expanding business and data center environments. It ships with two Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processors running at 2.2 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo across ten cores each. Memory capacity is 64 GB via four 16 GB DDR4-2400 ECC registered modules. Storage comprises twelve 8 TB 7.2K SATA 3.5-inch drives managed by a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies provide redundancy.

Virtualisation and database focus

This server suits teams running virtualization, software-defined storage, database workloads, and business-critical applications that benefit from high drive counts and hardware RAID flexibility. The integrated dual-port gigabit adapter and iDRAC 9 Express handle essential connectivity and remote management. Buyers needing more than twelve drive bays, higher core counts per socket, or additional PCIe expansion beyond the base chassis should evaluate other platforms.

Storage controller capability

The PERC H730P supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60 plus pass-through mode with battery-backed cache. This single specification determines whether the array can deliver the data protection and performance profile your workload requires.

Questions about this item

How does the 2.2 GHz base clock with 3.0 GHz turbo on the Xeon 4114 affect performance in a virtualised environment?

Each Xeon 4114 runs at 2.2 GHz base and can reach 3.0 GHz turbo across its 10 cores, giving strong single-thread response and multi-thread throughput for virtual machines and database workloads.

What RAID levels does the PERC H730P controller support and how does the 12 Gb/s SAS interface limit drive speed?

The H730P supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with a 2 GB cache; its 12 Gb/s SAS lanes cap the 7.2K SATA drives at their native 6 Gb/s link speed.

Will the twelve 3.5-inch drive bays and ready-rail mounting fit a standard 2U rack without extra brackets?

The chassis holds twelve 3.5-inch drives in a 2U form factor; the listing notes that front bezel and ready rails are not included, so you will need rails or shelves for rack mounting.
