Purpose-built storage server

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server equipped with dual Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with a 3.2 GHz turbo frequency and 12 cores. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory support virtualization and database workloads. The PERC H330 controller manages twelve 3.5-inch 4 TB enterprise SATA drives spinning at 7.2K RPM.

Suited for capacity-first deployments

This configuration fits teams that need dense, redundant storage for backups, archives, or software-defined storage clusters. Buyers who require faster flash-based performance, larger memory footprints for heavy virtualization, or included rack rails and bezel for immediate installation should evaluate other options.

Storage controller decides fit

The PERC H330 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA controller provides hardware RAID for the twelve drive bays without a dedicated cache module. If your workload demands write-back caching with battery or flash backup, this controller will not meet that requirement.

Questions about this item

How much power do the two Xeon Gold 5118 CPUs and dual 750 W PSUs draw when the R540 runs at full load all day?

Each Xeon Gold 5118 runs at 2.3 GHz base and 3.2 GHz turbo across 12 cores, and the server includes two 750 W Platinum power supplies to handle sustained workloads.

What rails or cabling must I already have to install this 2U server in a standard rack?

The front bezel and ready rails are not included, so you need compatible rack rails and power cords for the dual 750 W PSUs.

Can the PERC H330 controller manage the 12 x 4 TB 7.2K SATA drives together with older SAS drives I might keep?

The H330 supports 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA, so it can manage the twelve 3.5" 4 TB SATA drives and additional SAS drives in the same backplane.
