Versatile 2U rack server for growing businesses

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rackmount server built for expanding business and data center environments. It targets virtualization, database management, and software-defined storage workloads. Dual Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors and 128GB DDR4 ECC memory deliver enterprise-class reliability. Flexible drive bay options suit storage-intensive applications.

Simple rail installation.

The unit mounts in a standard 2U rack space using compatible rails. Front bezel and Ready Rails are not included in the shipment, so they must be sourced separately. Twelve 3.5-inch drive bays accept SAS or SATA devices without adapters. The PERC H330 controller manages RAID configuration through the iDRAC 9 Express interface.

SATA 6Gb/s and SAS 12Gb/s limits govern drive speed

The storage controller and backplane support SAS at 12Gb/s and SATA at 6Gb/s. Installed 7.2K RPM hard drives operate at the SATA 6Gb/s interface ceiling. Dual 1GbE network ports restrict throughput to one gigabit per second. Two 750 Watt platinum power supplies provide redundancy within the chassis power budget.

Questions about this item

How can I confirm the PERC H330 controller sees all twelve 4 TB drives after first boot?

Open the controller BIOS during POST and verify that all twelve 3.5 inch SATA drives appear as healthy members of the expected virtual disk.

Which components are included and which must be sourced separately?

The server ships with two Xeon Gold 5118 processors, eight 16 GB DDR4-2400 ECC RDIMMs, the H330 controller, twelve 4 TB 7.2K SATA drives, dual 1 GbE ports, iDRAC9 Express, and two 750 W platinum power supplies; front bezel and ready rails are not included.

Is the supplied 128 GB memory configuration suitable for virtualization workloads, or should I plan to add modules?

The 128 GB kit uses eight 16 GB DDR4-2400 ECC registered modules and provides a balanced starting point for virtualization; additional capacity can be added later if workload demands grow.
