2U rack server for storage workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built for environments that need high internal storage density. It ships with twelve 3.5-inch drive bays populated by 8TB 7.2K SATA drives and a PERC H330 controller. Dual Xeon Gold 5118 processors and 256GB of DDR4-2400 ECC memory provide compute power for virtualization and database tasks.

Suits storage-heavy deployments.

This configuration fits teams running virtual machines, software-defined storage, or business databases that benefit from large spinning-disk arrays. Buyers who need GPU acceleration, all-flash performance, or a smaller 1U form factor should evaluate other platforms. The included iDRAC 9 Express handles remote management without extra licensing.

12-bay 3.5-inch chassis with H330 controller

The defining specification is the twelve-bay 3.5-inch chassis paired with the PERC H330 storage controller, which determines how many drives you can install and which RAID levels are available. Dual 750W platinum power supplies deliver redundant power for the fully loaded enclosure. Front bezel and ready rails are not included.

Questions about this item

What rack mounting hardware must I supply to install the 2U PowerEdge R540 in my cabinet?

The Ready Rails kit is not included, so you will need a compatible Dell sliding rail set or a universal 2U rack rail to secure the chassis.

Can the PERC H330 controller manage the 12x 8TB 7.2K SATA drives together with older SAS drives I want to keep?

The H330 supports 12Gb/s SAS and 6Gb/s SATA, so it can address both the new 8TB SATA disks and legacy SAS drives in the same backplane.

How do I verify the 2x Xeon Gold 5118 CPUs and 256GB DDR4-2400 memory are detected after first power-on?

Open the iDRAC 9 Express web interface or watch the POST screen; both will list two 12-core processors at 2.3GHz and eight 32GB DIMMs running at 2400MT/s.
