Dual 10-Core Xeon Silver 4114 Server

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built for virtualization, database workloads and software-defined storage. Two Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processors run at 2.2 GHz with a 3.0 GHz turbo frequency, each providing ten cores. The system ships with 128 GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory across eight 16 GB modules.

Platinum 750W Redundant Power && Thermal Design

Dual 750 Watt platinum-efficiency power supplies deliver redundant power for continuous operation. The 2U chassis uses forced-air cooling tuned for the dual-processor configuration and twelve 3.5-inch drive bays. Integrated dual-port Gigabit Ethernet handles network traffic without adding discrete adapter heat.

HBA330 Controller with Twelve 8TB Drives

A Dell PERC HBA330 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA controller manages the twelve 8 TB 7.2K SATA hard drives in a JBOD or software RAID layout. iDRAC 9 Express provides remote monitoring and administration over a dedicated management port. Front bezel and ready rails are not included, so plan for separate rack-mount hardware.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 12x 8TB 3.5" SATA drives into the 2U chassis, and what step is often missed?

Slide each drive into the front hot-swap bays until the latch clicks; the step often missed is confirming the HBA330 sees all 12 drives in its BIOS before booting the OS.

What maintenance or replacement will the 12x 7.2K SATA drives and 2x 750W PSUs need later?

The 12 drives are the primary wear items — plan to replace any that develop bad sectors or SMART alerts; the redundant 750W PSUs only need swapping if a unit fails or its fan degrades.

What limit appears first when all 10-core Xeon 4114 CPUs run at 3.0GHz Turbo with 128GB DDR4-2400 and 12 drives active?

Sustained all-core Turbo across both 10-core processors plus 12 spinning drives can push the 750W PSU rating, triggering thermal throttling before any memory or controller bottleneck.
