PowerEdge R640 10-bay server

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rackmount server built for business workloads such as virtualization, databases, file storage, backups and application hosting. Two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors deliver 48 cores at 2.1 GHz for dependable multi-threaded performance. It is suited for data centres, server rooms, labs and growing IT environments that need high-density compute. Buyers who require GPU acceleration or larger 3.5-inch drive bays should look elsewhere.

512 GB DDR4 with 3 TB headroom

The system ships with 512 GB of DDR4 memory installed across two processors, supporting multiple services, virtual machines and data-heavy applications. Maximum memory capacity reaches 3 TB, giving ample headroom for future expansion. Ten 2.5-inch drive trays provide flexible storage configuration, though drives are not included. Workloads needing more than 3 TB of RAM or 3.5-inch drive support will exceed this platform.

X540/I350 network and tray kit

Dual-port X540 10 GbE and I350 1 GbE controllers are integrated, offering high-speed and management networking without extra cards. The 10-bay tray kit is included, simplifying drive installation in the front-access chassis. No operating system, rail kit or bezel is mentioned in the supplied data. Environments requiring Fibre Channel, InfiniBand or pre-loaded hypervisors will need separate purchases.

Questions about this item

Will the 10 x 2.5-inch bays accept my existing 2.5-inch drives?

The chassis provides ten 2.5-inch drive bays, so any standard 2.5-inch drive will fit.

How can I confirm the dual Xeon Platinum 8160 CPUs are recognised after installation?

Check the system BIOS or operating system to verify both 18-core processors at 2.1 GHz and the full 512 GB DDR4 memory are detected.

Are drives included or must I purchase them separately?

Drives are not included; you must supply your own 2.5-inch drives for the ten available bays.
