Ready for virtualisation and database workloads

This 1U Dell PowerEdge R640 packs two Intel Xeon Silver 4108 processors running at 1.80 GHz, giving 16 cores total. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 memory and six 1.92 TB SATA SSDs managed by a PERC H740P RAID controller. The configuration targets file storage, virtualisation, databases, backups and application hosting in a compact rack footprint.

Limited to dual-socket growth and SATA media

The chassis supports a maximum of two processors, so buyers who need four-socket scaling must look elsewhere. Memory is fixed at 64 GB in this build, so workloads demanding larger memory footprints will require a different system. Storage uses SATA SSDs rather than faster flash interfaces, which may not satisfy latency-sensitive workloads.

Dual Xeon Silver 4108 at 1.80 GHz

Two Silver 4108 CPUs deliver 16 cores at a base frequency of 1.80 GHz on the LGA 3647 platform. This processor choice defines the performance ceiling for virtualisation density, database throughput and multi-threaded application response in this server.

Questions about this item

How do I install the two Xeon Silver 4108 processors into the LGA 3647 sockets, and what step is often missed?

Align each CPU with the socket keying, lower the load plate gently, then torque the retention screws in a cross pattern; the step often missed is applying fresh thermal paste before seating the heatsink.

Which components will need replacement first in the 64GB DDR4 memory and 6x 1.92TB SATA SSD array?

The SATA SSDs have a finite write endurance; under heavy database workloads they will reach their program/erase limit before the DDR4 modules or the H740P controller require service.

What thermal or power limit appears first when the dual 16-core CPUs run sustained workloads in the 1U chassis?

The 1U form factor restricts airflow, so CPU package temperatures hit the throttling threshold before the power supply or the H740P RAID controller reaches its rated limits.
