Dense Compute Platform

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for scale-out data center workloads. Dual Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors deliver 24 cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. 512 GB of DDR4 ECC memory across 16 populated slots supports memory-intensive applications. The PERC H730P controller manages eight 2.4 TB SAS drives in multiple RAID levels.

Virtualisation and Database Fit

This configuration suits virtualisation clusters, database nodes and high-performance computing tasks that benefit from dual-socket density and large memory capacity. Buyers who need more than two processors, GPU acceleration, or storage interfaces beyond SAS and SATA should evaluate other platforms. The 1U form factor limits internal expansion to the provided drive bays and network daughter card.

512 GB DDR4 Memory Installed

Sixteen 32 GB DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC modules fill 16 of 24 DIMM slots, leaving eight slots available for future upgrades up to the 3 TB maximum. This memory capacity directly determines how many virtual machines or how large a dataset the server can handle efficiently.

Questions about this item

What comes with the PowerEdge R640 and what must I add?

The unit ships with two Xeon Silver 4116 processors, 512 GB DDR4 in 16 modules, the PERC H730P controller, eight 2.4 TB SAS drives, the X520/I350 quad-port network card, iDRAC9 Enterprise, two 750 W PSUs, rails and bezel. Only additional memory or drives need purchasing.

Should I choose a different memory or drive configuration?

Memory is already at 512 GB across 16 slots using 32 GB DDR4 modules; 8 slots remain for expansion up to 3 TB. All eight 2.5-inch bays are filled with 2.4 TB SAS drives, so any change means replacing existing drives.

What does the 2.1 GHz base speed mean in practice?

Each of the 24 cores runs at 2.1 GHz base with 3.0 GHz turbo, giving consistent multi-threaded throughput for virtualization and database workloads inside a 1U rack footprint.
