A 1U rack server with dual Xeon Gold 6134 processors, 64GB DDR4 ECC memory, H730P RAID controller, and two 800GB SATA SSDs for dense scale-out workloads
The PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rackmount server fitted with two Intel Xeon Gold 6134 processors running at 3.20 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo. Eight cores per CPU give 16 cores total, supported by 64 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules. The Dell PERC H730P 2 GB controller manages two 800 GB SATA SSDs and offers RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies, iDRAC9 Enterprise, quad-port networking with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, plus rails and bezel complete the package.
This configuration fits dense scale-out workloads, virtualization clusters and database nodes that benefit from high per-core frequency and dual-socket memory bandwidth. Buyers who need more than 64 GB of memory out of the box should look at a different configuration. The 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis limits internal drive count, so deployments requiring many local spindles will need external storage. Workloads that demand a larger rack footprint or more than two processors are not addressed by this platform.
The storage controller is a Dell PERC H730P with 2 GB battery-backed cache, providing 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA connectivity. It determines which RAID levels are available and whether the installed SSDs can be placed in a protected array. Buyers must verify that this controller matches their RAID and drive-interface requirements before purchase.

Other versions of this model
The PERC H730P runs at 12 Gb/s and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60; the two 800 GB SATA SSDs connect at 6 Gb/s, so sustained reads and writes are limited by the drive interface rather than the controller.
The system has 24 DDR4 slots; four are populated with 16 GB modules, leaving 20 slots open for up to 3 TB total capacity.
The R640 1U chassis includes eight 2.5-inch hot-swap bays; two are occupied by the 800 GB SATA SSDs, leaving six bays available for additional drives.
