1U rack server with dual 12-core Xeon Silver 4116 CPUs, 512 GB DDR4 ECC memory, PERC H730P RAID controller, dual 400 GB SATA SSDs, quad-port 1 GbE and 10 GbE networking, iDRAC9 Enterprise.
The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a dual-socket 1U rack server built for scale-out data center workloads. Two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors provide 24 cores at 2.10 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. 512 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory fills 16 of the 24 available slots. The PERC H730P controller manages storage with 2 GB cache and battery backup.
Moving from a single-socket server or a platform with fewer than 24 total cores gives a measurable jump in parallel throughput for virtualisation, database and HPC tasks. The 1U form factor keeps rack density high while the second CPU and large memory capacity remove the bottlenecks that appear on smaller configurations. The jump is worth it when workloads exceed the thread count or memory ceiling of a single-socket box.
Confirm the rack can accept a 1U chassis with ready rails and that two 750 W platinum power supplies match the available PDU circuits. The X520/I350 daughter card delivers two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, so ensure compatible transceivers and cabling are on hand. Eight 2.5-inch drive bays are wired to the H730P; plan any additional SAS or SATA drives around the remaining bays and controller ports.

Other versions of this model
The server is a 1U rack-mount unit and ships with Ready Rails for tool-less installation in standard racks.
Both CPUs are factory-installed in the LGA 3647 sockets; the step people miss is verifying that all 16 DDR4 DIMMs are seated before first boot.
The H730P includes a 2GB cache with a battery backup that will need replacement when the battery reaches end of life to preserve write-cache protection.
