Dual-socket 1U rack server with two 12-core Xeon Gold 5118 CPUs, 768 GB DDR4 ECC memory, eight 400 GB SATA SSDs on a PERC H730P RAID controller, quad-port 1/10 GbE networking.
The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores. It ships with 768 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 24 slots and eight 400 GB SATA SSDs managed by a PERC H730P RAID controller with 2 GB cache. Redundant 750 W power supplies, iDRAC9 Enterprise, quad-port networking and sliding rails complete the package for immediate data-center deployment.
This configuration targets dense virtualisation, database and cloud-native clusters that benefit from high core counts and large memory capacity in a single rack unit. The eight 2.5-inch drive bays and dual 10 GbE SFP+ ports support storage-heavy and network-intensive tasks. Buyers who need more than eight drive bays, GPU acceleration or a larger form factor for additional PCIe cards should consider a different platform.
The chassis provides exactly eight hot-swap 2.5-inch bays populated with 400 GB SATA SSDs and driven by the H730P controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. This bay count and SATA interface determine how much flash capacity can be installed internally without external enclosures.

Other versions of this model
Slide each drive into a bay until the latch clicks, then verify the PERC H730P controller detects all 8 SSDs in the RAID BIOS before loading the OS.
The controller includes a battery-backed cache; plan to replace the battery module when iDRAC 9 Enterprise reports a degraded cache state.
The 750-watt platinum power supplies set the ceiling; prolonged turbo on all 24 cores can trip the redundant PSU protection before CPU throttling activates.
