1U dual-socket rack server with 20-core Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs, 128GB DDR4, H730P RAID and quad-port 1/10Gb networking
The Dell PowerEdge R640 fits two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors in a single rack unit, providing 20 cores per CPU at 2.4 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 24 slots, supporting up to 3 TB total. The system targets dense scale-out workloads such as virtualization clusters, database nodes and high-performance compute farms.
Dual hot-swap 750 watt platinum-efficiency units share the load, keeping each supply in its high-efficiency band during typical operation. The 1U chassis uses front-to-rear airflow calibrated for data-centre cold-aisle temperatures, so fan speeds stay moderate under normal utilisation. The PERC H730P controller and X520/I350 quad-port network daughter card add minimal incremental heat.
With both Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs active, the 3.7 GHz all-core turbo can be maintained as long as the workload keeps the package within its thermal envelope. The H730P’s 2 GB cache and battery-backed write-back accelerate sustained write streams without throttling. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides continuous telemetry so operators can correlate power draw, temperature and performance during extended runs.

Slide each tray into the front bays until the latch clicks; the step often missed is seating the latch fully so the drive connects to the SAS/SATA backplane.
The controller uses a battery-backed cache; plan to replace the battery module when the iDRAC 9 Enterprise console reports a degraded or failed battery status.
Thermal headroom in the 1U chassis is the first limit; dual 750 W Platinum PSUs and system fans must keep both 20-core Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs within their temperature envelope.
