Dual-socket 1U rack server

This Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors running at 2.4 GHz with 20 cores each. It ships with 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 24 slots and eight 800 GB SATA solid-state drives managed by a PERC H730P controller. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies, iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management, and a quad-port 1/10 GbE network daughter card are included.

Suits dense virtualisation and scale-out workloads

The 40 combined cores and 256 GB DDR4 capacity fit virtualisation hosts, container clusters, and high-density compute farms that need redundant power and remote management in a single rack unit. Buyers who require more than 3 TB of memory, additional drive bays beyond the eight 2.5-inch slots, or a different storage interface should evaluate other platforms because this unit maxes at 3 TB and uses SATA SSDs only.

PERC H730P RAID controller decides storage topology

The installed Dell PERC H730P 2 GB controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes across the eight SATA SSDs, determining data redundancy and performance characteristics. Verify that the RAID levels and 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA connectivity match the intended workload before deployment.

Questions about this item

What does the 2.4 GHz base clock on the Xeon Gold 6148 mean for sustained workloads in this 1U server?

The dual 20-core processors run at 2.4 GHz base with a 3.7 GHz turbo ceiling, giving 40 total cores for parallel tasks while the 1U form factor relies on the redundant 750 W supplies and integrated cooling to maintain clocks under load.

How does the PERC H730P controller and SATA interface limit the eight 800 GB SSDs in practice?

The H730P provides 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA connectivity with 2 GB cache and battery-backed write cache, supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through, so the SATA SSDs operate at their 6 Gb/s link speed within any of those RAID modes.

What physical mounting hardware is included for the 1U rack chassis?

The unit ships with Ready Rails sliding rails and a front bezel, allowing tool-less installation in a standard four-post rack cabinet.
