The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a dual-socket 1U rack server built for scale-out workloads. Two Xeon Silver 4116 processors deliver 24 cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory occupies eight of the 24 available slots. Eight 400 GB SATA SSDs connect through a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache and battery backup.

Virtualisation hosts, not GPU farms

This configuration suits hypervisor clusters, database nodes and high-density web tiers that benefit from dual 10 GbE SFP+ ports and redundant 750 W platinum supplies. Buyers who need GPU acceleration or more than eight drive bays in a single 1U chassis should evaluate alternative platforms. The installed SATA SSDs address read-heavy workloads; write-intensive applications may require different media.

The chassis provides exactly eight hot-swap 2.5" bays, all populated with 400 GB SATA SSDs in this build. Expansion beyond eight drives demands external enclosures or a different server form factor. The PERC H730P supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode for software-defined storage stacks.
