Dual Xeon 8160 24-core 1U rack server with 512GB DDR4, PERC H730P RAID, quad-port 1GbE and 10GbE SFP+, iDRAC9 Enterprise, redundant 750W PSUs, eight 2.5" trays, rails and bezel included
The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a dual-socket 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data centre computing. Two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors deliver 24 cores each at 2.1 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo. 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory fills 16 of the 24 available slots. The platform suits virtualisation clusters, high-performance computing and database tiers that need maximum cores per rack unit.
Dual 750 W platinum-efficiency hot-swap power supplies keep both CPUs and memory fed during continuous heavy loads without throttling. The Intel C620 chipset and 12 Gb/s PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache maintain steady I/O to the eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA drive bays. Quad-port networking with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links prevents bottlenecks when moving data between nodes. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides remote monitoring and firmware updates without host OS involvement.
The installed 512 GB across 16 DIMM slots leaves eight slots open for expansion toward the 3 TB maximum. Buyers who need more memory headroom at purchase should look elsewhere. The LGA 3647 sockets are already populated with the maximum two processors, so CPU upgrades are not possible. Storage capacity depends entirely on the drives you add to the eight hot-swap trays.

Other versions of this model
Each supply is rated at 750 watts with Platinum efficiency; actual draw depends on the workload placed on the two 24-core processors and the 512 GB of DDR4 memory.
Eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA hot-swap trays and a PERC H730P 2 GB RAID controller supporting RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60 are fitted.
The card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, matching common copper and fibre uplinks.
