Dual-Socket 1U Rack Platform

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data centre computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6134 processors running at 3.2 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 768 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 24 slots and a PERC H730P 2 GB storage controller supporting RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60.

Suited For Virtualisation And Database Workloads

This configuration suits organisations that need high core counts and large memory capacity in a single rack unit for virtualisation clusters or in-memory databases. The eight 2.5-inch drive bays and quad-port 1 GbE plus 10 Gb SFP+ networking support storage-heavy and network-intensive deployments. Buyers who require installed solid-state drives or more than eight drive bays should look at alternative configurations.

768 GB DDR4 Across 24 Slots

The installed 768 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory fills all 24 DIMM slots, reaching the maximum supported by the two Xeon Gold 6134 processors. This capacity determines whether the server can hold the working set for memory-bound applications without paging. The platform supports up to 3 TB total when higher-capacity modules are used in a compatible configuration.

Questions about this item

Should I pick a configuration with more drive trays or a different RAID controller for this R640?

This unit ships with eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA trays and a PERC H730P 2GB controller supporting RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60; adding trays or swapping controllers would require a custom build.

What does the 3.2 GHz Xeon Gold 6134 speed mean for actual workloads?

Each of the two 8-core processors runs at a 3.2 GHz base clock and can turbo to 3.7 GHz, giving strong single-thread response and high multi-thread throughput for virtualisation or database tasks.

How does the 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA interface limit real-world storage performance?

The H730P controller and backplane operate at 12 Gb/s per lane, so SSD or HDD arrays are capped at that link speed regardless of individual drive ratings.
