Dense 1U dual-socket server

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors, each running at 2.6 GHz with 16 cores. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules and a PERC H730P storage controller with 2 GB cache. Two 400 GB SATA SSDs are installed in the front 2.5-inch drive bays. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies provide redundancy.

Fits virtualisation hosts and dense compute clusters

This configuration suits teams consolidating virtual machines or running memory-intensive workloads in a single rack unit. The quad-port network daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections without using a PCIe slot. Buyers who need more than 24 DIMM slots, additional 2.5-inch drive bays beyond the eight provided, or GPU compute density should evaluate larger chassis options.

PERC H730P RAID controller with battery-backed cache

The integrated PERC H730P supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode, and its 2 GB battery-backed cache protects in-flight writes during power loss. It manages both SAS and SATA drives through the same backplane. Confirm that your workload’s IOPS and capacity requirements align with two 400 GB SATA SSDs before deployment.

Questions about this item

How do I verify the iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management is active after the server boots?

Open a browser to the iDRAC IP shown on the front LCD, log in with the default credentials, and confirm the dashboard reports both Xeon Gold 6142 CPUs, 64GB DDR4, the PERC H730P controller, and the two 400GB SSDs in a healthy state.

What components are included and what must be sourced separately?

The unit ships with two Xeon Gold 6142 processors, 64GB DDR4 in four 16GB modules, PERC H730P with battery, two 400GB SATA SSDs, X520/I350 quad-port network card, iDRAC9 Enterprise, two 750W PSUs, bezel, and rails; extra drives, memory, or SFP+ modules are not included.

Should I choose a configuration with more memory or more drive bays for a virtualization host?

This 1U chassis has eight 2.5-inch bays and 24 DDR4 slots supporting up to 3TB; with 64GB installed and six bays free, you can add memory for VM density or SSDs for capacity without changing the platform.
