Dual-socket 1U rack server with two 16-core Xeon Gold 6142 CPUs, 512GB DDR4, PERC H730P RAID and eight 400GB SATA SSDs
The Dell PowerEdge R640 packs two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors, each with 16 cores at 2.6 GHz, into a single rack unit. It ships with 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory and a PERC H730P RAID controller managing eight 400 GB SATA SSDs. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies, iDRAC9 Enterprise and a quad-port 1 GbE and 10 Gb SFP+ network card complete the configuration.
This server targets workloads that demand high core counts and large memory capacity in minimal rack space. Buyers needing more than two processor sockets, GPU acceleration or additional PCIe expansion slots should evaluate alternative chassis designs because the 1U form factor limits add-in cards. The installed controller handles SATA and SAS drives only.
The storage subsystem relies on the H730P with 2 GB cache, supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Eight 2.5-inch SATA SSDs are pre-installed and the chassis provides eight drive bays in total. This controller choice determines which drive types and RAID levels are available without adding extra hardware.

Other versions of this model
Two 16-core Xeon Gold 6142 processors with a 3.7 GHz turbo and eight 400 GB SATA SSDs are cooled by redundant 750 W platinum power supplies designed for sustained 1U operation.
Ready Rails and a front bezel are included; the Intel X520/I350 daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, so only compatible SFP+ transceivers and cables are needed.
The H730P supports SAS and SATA drives in RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through, while the 24 DDR4 slots accept registered ECC modules up to 3 TB total capacity.
